How to Make an Oriole Feeder
Orioles aren’t crazy about birdseed, which is why having an oriole feeder with either oranges or jelly is ideal.
As you can imagine, most traditional bird feeders don’t hold either of these things, so you need to buy an oriole feeder or make your own.
Don’t fret, because here you will learn how to make an oriole feeder that can hold either oranges or jelly for just a few bucks.
In fact, I found everything I needed at my local dollar store. And since you can make this bird feeder in under 20 minutes, I would say it is a win win.
Here is how to get started on your own DIY oriole feeder.

How to Make an Oriole Feeder
Here is what you will need to make your own DIY oriole feeder. As I mentioned, I found everything I needed at my local dollar store and gardening center.
In fact, they even had wire in various colors! I am going to show you how to make two different DIY oriole feeders. One is designed for holding oranges while the other is perfect for grape jelly!
You can simply choose the type of feeder you want to make, and find the separate tutorials below. Or, you can really bring the orioles to your yard and make both!
DIY Jelly Feeder
Jelly Feeder Supplies:
– crafting wire, at least 5-6 feet ($1 at dollar store)
– small terra cotta saucer (.50 at gardening center)
– grape jelly
Orange Feeder Supplies:
– crafting wire, at least 5-6 feet ($1 at dollar store)
– oranges
– knife
For both of these feeders I am NOT cutting any wire. There is no need to. We are just going to wrap it and manipulated as we want, no snipping required.

Now let’s get crafting.
Again, I have two different tutorials below so you can easily skip to the type of feeder you are interested in.
Up first we will talk about how to make the orange feeder. Orioles love to eat oranges, and this feeder allows you to easily offer it to them.
How to make an orange Oriole feeder
DIY Oriole Orange Feeder:
1. Start by unraveling the wire into a straight line. It does not have to be a perfect line.
2. Curve the bottom of the wire into a loop. This is where your orange half will go. You can curve it twice if you wish for more support.
3. Twist the wire into a small loop by the main loop. This will give the bird a small perch.
4. Now just straighten the wire upwards. You can loop it, zig zag it, create any design you wish. At the very top of the wire, twist it into another loop for hanging. Wrap any additional wire around the neck of the loop for extra security.
Now just cut your oranges in half. Place one half in the cradle at the bottom of the feeder. To add orange additional orange halves, simply slide the wire through the center of the orange.
It will be easiest to twist it on via the bottom of the feeder since the top has been turned into the hoop for hanging. Your oriole bird feeder is now ready for use!

How to make a jelly oriole feeder
DIY Oriole Jelly Feeder:
Orioles love grape jelly, and this feeder is a great way to provide it for them!
1. Unwrap the wire into a straight line. The line does not have to be perfect.
2. Wrap the bottom of the wire into a loop that is slightly smaller than the size of your terra cotta saucer. Wrap 2-3 of these loops on top of each other so they offer plenty of support to the saucer.
3. Place the saucer in the loop to make sure it fits and is secure.
4. Take the wire and make twirls or zig zags and bend it over the top of the saucer like a rainbow.
5. Attach the wire to the opposite side, by wrapping it around the wire holding the saucer.
Now just add some grape jelly to the saucer. Your oriole feeder is now ready for use!
